Efforts such as this Career Diversity Grant contribute directly to the mission of the University of Texas at El Paso, a Hispanic Serving Institution, which stands as a model of “access and excellence” for a Research University with a 21st century demographic. Since its inauguration in 1999, our PhD Program has graduated 28 students, of which 60% are students of color, and 29% are women of color. Alumni who have entered academia are teaching at institutions across the U.S and Mexico, and several have chosen non-academic career paths. We presently have 39 doctoral students, of which 74% are students of color and 33% are women of color. By 2020 we will have graduated nearly 40 students of color. Thus, we are uniquely poised to prepare students of color for the professoriate and careers beyond the classroom.
