THE NOTEBOOK OF NANCY LEA

THE NOTEBOOK OF NANCY LEA

Amount awarded: $3,475

In honor of Tom Lea Month, which is observed every October, the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens (a part of The University of Texas at El Paso) will create the exhibit “The Notebook of Nancy Lea.” This exhibit is of particular importance because, while much is known on the legendary artist Tom Lea, very little is known about his first wife, Nancy, who died of an illness in 1936. A year later, Tom Lea, along with his friend Carl Hertzog, published 25 copies of her notebook, which gave a very select group of readers an insight into her life, personal thoughts and wishes. Nancy (Taylor) Lea was an artist and writer in her own right and some credit her with encouraging Tom to boldly pursue his dreams. The Centennial Museum is also the appropriate venue for this exhibit as we have a gallery named after Tom Lea.
