PROJECT NAMASTE II
PI: Marianne Karplus
Co-PI: Aaron Velasco
Sponsor: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
Geological Sciences
Amount awarded: $213,221

In response to the April 2015 earthquake in Nepal, scientists from UTEP and Stanford were urgently deployed by NSF to deploy a seismometers array across eastern Nepal (NAMASTE array). This project provides funds to continue the NAMASTE array operational for additional 6 to 12 months. In this project, the team will analyze newly collected data set specifically to study the geometry of faults (including the Main Himalayan Thrust), composition of the crust and upper mantle, rupture process, and broader geotectonic setting in the Himalaya and southern Tibet.
