Esmaeil Balal is developing an externally funded research program, incorporating undergraduate and graduate students, in the fields of smart cities; innovative technologies, such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS); autonomous vehicles and automated vehicle lanes; data management techniques; and reducing traffic congestion, which would reduce energy usage and improving passenger safety and satisfaction. Since interdisciplinary collaboration both enriches his current achievements and opens windows to new possibilities, he would also like to discover approaches involve utilizing soft computing techniques in formulation of traffic and transportation systems, in collaboration with academic professionals in majors outside of civil engineering. He will also work on sustainable transit oriented development, such as intermodal transfer facility location design (park-and-ride, bike and ride, and bus and rail coordination system), bus rapid transit systems, and high-speed train systems to implement sustainable and reliable public transportation systems.
