Josemaria Herrera
Clinical Assistant Professor, Teacher Education

Dr. Jose Maria Herrera is an assistant professor of Social Studies Education at the University of Texas at El Paso. He graduated from Purdue University with a doctoral degree specializing in 19th century American history with strong concentrations in American foreign policy and the history of Latin America. In his current assignment, Dr. Herrera works with pre-service teachers to prepare them to instruct social studies at the elementary and middle school levels. Dr. Herrera has published articles on Robert Owen, educational methods, educational policy, as well as war and public figures of the 19th and early 20th century. His current interests in the field of education deal with the status and teaching practices concerning social studies at the K-6 level as well as the use of primary documents, graphic novels and games for instruction. In the realm of history, Dr. Herrera is currently writing articles concerning the early history of American transoceanic canals, U.S. diplomatic relations with post- Independence Latin America and Chicano Vietnam Veterans. Dr. Herrera is entering his eleventh year in higher education, having previously taught at Ball State University and the University of Houston-Downtown.
