Assistant Professor, Geological Sciences

Xu's research leverages the latest thinking in nanogeoscience and geomicrobiology to advance the understanding of fundamental biogeochemical processes on Earth, particularly those governing the distribution and cycling of elements (i.e., sulfur and metals), and the transfer of electrons and energy between minerals and associated microorganisms. Xu combines multidisciplinary methods in aqueous geochemistry (e.g., ICP-MS), material science (e.g., HRTEM, XRD, XPS) and molecular biology (e.g., q-PCR) to carry out this work. Examples of Xu's work include investigating the origin, reactivity and fate of naturally occurring nanoparticles in geological and environmental matrices, examining the effects of nanomineral surface chemistry on the behavior of associated microorganisms (e.g., biofilm formation), synthesizing nanocrystals via abiotic and biological pathways, and comparing bacterial community compositions in sediment samples from natural and bioremediation sites.
