The access network is the portion of a telecommunications network that interconnects subscribers’ private networks to service provider's public networks that connect to the Internet. Dr. McGarry's research has led to several mechanisms that allow these networks to operate more efficiently with respect to the utilization of transmission channels, as well as energy consumption. His recent interest are in cloud computing and network measurement. His published works have received over 1100 citations according to Google Scholar (h-Index is 12, Erdos number is 2). One of his articles, was the recipient of the 2009 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper award. He is the director of UTEP's Communication Networks Laboratory (NetLab). His first PhD student, Dr. Rami Haddad is tenure-track faculty at Georgia Southern University. His second PhD student, Dr. Salvador Melendez is a researcher with the US Army Research Laboratory. His third PhD student who will complete his dissertation in 2017, Elliott Gurrola, successfully completed an internship at the famous Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ during the Summer of 2014.
