Dr. Gonzalez's main research areas are in Applied Communications Networks, Cyber - Physical systems, and Engineering education. Applied communications try to use networking technologies to solve problems in other fields. Cyber-physical systems integrate computing and communications embedding them in other systems. For example, some recent projects include developing Fiber Optic sensors for structural health monitoring, study of wireless sensor network and spectrum performance, and develop autonomous drone collision avoidance. In the area of engineering education, he has enhanced the use of mobile computing and robotics to improve student retention. His previous experience includes more than 5 years in the Telecommunications sector and 5 years in IT management.
