This project will investigate spatially-variant photonic crystals for use as light concentrators. Conventional techniques for concentrating light are based on refraction and reflection where the position of the concentration zone changes with position of the input beam and angle of the input beam. In self-collimating photonic crystals, the position of the concentration zone is completely independent of the position and angle of the input beam. This holds great promise to develop a new class of light concentrators based in spatially-variant self-collimating photonic crystals. Applications include sensing, coupling light into and out of waveguides, optical interconnects, and more.
