The ultimate goal of the research is to utilize the process water as a resource, rather than regard it a waste that requires harsh treatment so that it can be discarded. The best technique for removal of acid from a dilute solution is electrodialysis (ED) with special membranes. The PI has conducted laboratory ED experiments to recover sulfuric and phosphoric acids separately and found that these acids could be concentrated to about 2 molar from very low initial concentrations, the strength required for dissolution of calcium phosphate.
