Brian Jarvis is a music theorist who specializes in large-scale film-music analysis and phrase structure & form in 19th-century music. He has a special interest in the films of Joel & Ethan Coen and P.T. Anderson and the music of Frederic Chopin, Charles Alkan, and Felix Mendelssohn. He has developed a method for creating visual representations of entire films and their music based upon the film’s narrative structure. His research in phrase structure & form explores the development of these topics in the 19th century and the ways in which individual composers exploit expectations as well as explore new means of formal expression.
