Candyce S Berger
Professor, Social Work - Interdisciplinary Health Sciences
Associate Dean, College of Health Sciences

A major direction to Dr. Berger’s research has been on health care policies, especially how economic and political policies shape social work practice in health care settings. After 17 years in health care administration, her research and scholarship focused on administration, supervision, and leadership. A more recent direction to Dr. Berger’s research has emanated from her interest in prevention. As health care costs continue to escalate, increased emphasis is placed on preventing illness or the exacerbation of complications. She began to study primary prevention strategies as an intervention method for social work practitioners. Dr. Berger studied risk prevention in maternal and child health and then partnered with a sexual assault center to test the implementation of a primary prevention strategy with men. She was later invited to join a city-wide coalition to develop a primary prevention strategy to reduce the incidence of unintentional injuries related to home-based falls among the Hispanic elderly living in El Paso County. Her work in falls is now expanding to issues related to healthy aging within the US-Mexico border region. Dr. Berger’s prevention focus has also led to several grants related to risk prevention in transitional foster youth and family unification within the foster care system.
