José Villalobos
Associate Professor, Political Science

Dr. José D. Villalobos is Associate Professor of Political Science and the Provost's Faculty Fellow-in-Residence in the Center for Civic Engagement at UTEP. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University. He is a recipient of the University of Texas System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award and UTEP's Most Distinguished Faculty Member Award for commitment to teaching excellence.

His research examines policy making and public opinion dynamics in the areas of the U.S. presidency, race/ethnicity, and immigration. His publications include articles in Journal of Politics, Public Administration, Political Research Quarterly, Presidential Studies Quarterly, and other venues. He is also co-author of the book Czars in the White House: The Rise of Policy Czars as Presidential Management Tools (University of Michigan Press, 2015).

At UTEP, Dr. Villalobos currently serves as Fellow for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Fellow and core member for UTEP's Community of Engaged Scholars, member of the Community Engagement Council of the Provost's Office, member of UTEP's Center for Interamerican and Border Studies, and Director of Student Enhancement and External Relations for Political Science. Dr. Villalobos is also a member of the Presidents & Executive Politics section of the American Political Science Association and recently served as the Executive Politics section chair for the 2015 Southern Political Science Association conference.
