Dr. Shepherd's research focuses on several areas; the histories of Indigenous peoples in North America broadly, and along the U.S. - Mexico border in particular; environmental history, particularly water use in the arid Southwest; public history and museum studies; race relations; militarization and immigration; and the general history of the U.S. – Mexico border.
