Patrick Schaefer

Patrick Schaefer is the Executive Director of the Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness at the University of Texas at El Paso. Patrick’s work focuses on Ibero-American commercial, financial, and natural resource law, with a particular emphasis on Mexico, Brazil, Spain, and Portugal. He received his J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law and his LL.M. from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He has conducted research at the University of Texas at Austin, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, the Universidade de São Paulo, the Torre do Tombo in Lisbon, and the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. His publications have centered on international bankruptcy and transboundary natural resource management. Prior to his appointment at the Hunt Institute, Patrick held positions at the law firm of Uría Menéndez, the Inter-American Development Bank, and, most recently, the World Bank Group. Patrick is also an active member of the New York and New Mexico bar, as well as the American Society of International Law and the International Law Association.
