Professor, Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering (MMBME) - Chemistry and Biochemistry

The areas of research interest for Dr. Varma include: structure-property relationships in metals and alloys, alloy development using constructed phase diagrams, microstructure evolutions in metals, oxidation in metallic materials at elevated temperatures, wear of materials, composite materials, and advanced concepts developed for the understanding of structural details during recovery period of annealing. The applications of research listed here include turbine blades and aerospace engineering systems. The incorporation of refractory metals for the high temperature applications is the thrust of his current research interests including emphasis on elevated temperature oxidation kinetics and developing oxidation resistant alloys. Novel Nb based alloys have been developed for this purpose by Dr. Varma and he is very widely considered as an expert in this area as evidenced by the invitation by the Editors of various refereed journals to serve on the editorial board or as referees. He has more than 100 publications in refereed journals and made more than 120 presentations in national and international conferences. His research has been supported by National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), Defense Logistic Agency (DLA), Office of Naval Research (ONR), and Advanced Rsearch Program (ARP) of Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
