Professor, Communication

Dr. Peterson has built a research program around the intersections between communication practice, democratic theory, and environmental policy. She brings an Earth Systems orientation to analyzing how these three dimensions enable/constrain policy options and public life. She defines environmental policy broadly to include topics such as energy system change, land-use planning, and wildlife conservation. Her professional goal is to conduct research that facilitates the emergence and implementation of more sustainable policy, while critiquing the normativity associated with sustainability. She values classroom teaching, and serves as a faculty mentor for graduate teaching assistants. She has developed an active Theory to Practice Program that includes design and evaluation of best practices for facilitating public participation in issues related to energy and environmental policy.
