Dr. Mata-Silva is interested in the ecology, evolution, geographic distribution, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles of the Chihuahuan Desert and Middle America (Mexico and Central America) as a whole. Dr. Mata-Silva is currently studying ecological features of rattlesnakes and lizard communities on the UTEP's Indio Mountains Research Station (IMRS). As assistant Director, Dr. Mata-Silva plans to improve the facilities in order to improve access to research opportunities as well as increase outreach and educational programs for students and faculty from UTEP, other U.S. institutions, and international organizations, especially those in Mexico.
