Dr. Watts is an internationally recognized expert on the ecology and epidemiology of human and animal viral diseases with 200 publications, including 8 medical text book chapters. His more noteworthy research activities included laboratory and field studies on Ebola, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, dengue, Human immunodeficiency, Human T cell leukemia, hepatitis B, C, D and E and other viral diseases in Asia, Africa and South America as a civilian employee for 30 years with the United States Army and Navy Medical Research community. Subsequently, as a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), research activities were focused on the evaluation of candidate therapeutics and vaccines for West Nile, monkeypox and yellow fever disease. At UTEP for over ten years, Dr. Watts has established a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory to support research on the ecology and epidemiology of West Nile, dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses and community engagement activities on the United State – Mexico border. Also, in collaboration with colleagues in Tanzania and Morocco, he was awarded a 5 year multi-million dollar Cooperative Agreement grant to evaluate a vaccine for protecting livestock against Rift Valley Fever disease in Africa. His current research interests and activities are on the control and prevention of emerging mosquito-borne viral diseases.
