Laura V Alvarez
Assistant Professor, Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences

Dr. Alvarez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Resource Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso and a recipient of the prestigious NSF CAREER Award. Her research focuses on developing advanced computational and field-based methodologies to address challenges in fluvial geomorphology, river dynamics, and environmental sustainability. By integrating hybrid physics-based and deep learning models, particularly turbulence-resolving models, she studies sediment transport, riverbed evolution, and slope stability. Her work also leverages uncrewed systems technologies, geospatial tools, and robot learning for efficient hydrosystem surveillance. Before joining UTEP, Dr. Alvarez served as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oklahoma’s Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling. Her research has explored turbulent flow patterns, erosion, and sedimentation in large-scale rivers and reservoirs, emphasizing their ecological and economic significance.Dr. Alvarez has taught courses in Geographic Information Systems, River Science, Geomorphology, and Physical Geography. She earned her Ph.D. and master’s degrees in Geography from Arizona State University and her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the National University of Colombia. An FAA-licensed remote pilot and active member of professional organizations, Dr. Alvarez continues to advance innovation in earth and environmental sciences.
