Assistant Professor, Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences

SummaryIn 2025, I maintained a strong and consistent record across teaching, research, and service. I taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Geospatial Information Science and Technology and continued to refine my curriculum by integrating GeoAI and updating geospatial laboratories, supported by active federal research funding. Between 2023 and 2025, I advanced an externally funded research program in physics-based modeling, artificial intelligence, and environmental systems, publishing peer-reviewed work, developing additional manuscripts under review, and closely integrating graduate students into scholarly production. Concurrently, I contributed sustained service at the departmental, university, and national levels through committee work, outreach activities, federal proposal review, and conference leadership, supporting institutional missions and broader disciplinary engagement.TeachingIn 2025, I taught undergraduate and graduate courses and continued to refine my instructional practices. I taught Introduction to Geospatial Information Science and Technologies (GEOL 4385/5321/6331) and Advanced GIST (GEOL 5322/6322). I implemented curricular innovations by adding three weeks of GeoAI content to Advanced GIST, including newly developed laboratories on supervised and deep learning using pre-trained models, and by completing a comprehensive revision of the Introduction to GIST laboratories to align with the latest ArcGIS Pro platform. In 2025, I supervised three Ph.D. students and one postdoctoral researcher, all supported through external funding. I maintained a structured mentoring framework with regular meetings and individualized research planning, supporting steady student progress, conference participation, and manuscript development.Research (2023–2025)Between 2023 and 2025, I advanced an externally funded research program at the intersection of physics-based modeling, artificial intelligence, and environmental systems. During this period, I secured six federally funded research awards, serving as Principal Investigator on two and Co-Principal Investigator on four. These projects represent $3,471,421 in total external research funding, with $1,009,430 attributable to my direct contribution based on documented percentage effort. As Principal Investigator, I led an NSF CAREER Award ($552,381; 100% contribution; 2023–2028) and an Army Research Office award ($150,587; 60% contribution; 2024–2025). As Co-Principal Investigator, I contributed to an NSF IMAGEN award ($607,542; 15%), a Department of Defense award establishing a Robotics and Autonomous Systems Research and Teaching Laboratory ($538,415; 10%), a NOAA EPP/MSI CESSRST award ($1,165,000; 10%), and an ARO collaborative research award on cohesive particle flow ($457,496; 23%).From 2023 to 2025, I published six peer-reviewed journal articles. Three manuscripts are co-authored with graduate students, reflecting strong integration of research and mentorship. Student research received formal recognition, including poster awards at departmental and university symposia. I also provided national leadership by organizing AGU sessions in 2024 and 2025 focused on machine learning and generative AI for hydrologic and river modeling.ServiceIn 2025, I contributed service at the departmental, university, and professional levels. I served on the GIST Committee and the Faculty Senate Advisory Committee for the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, and contributed to Earth Science Day. At the national level, I served as an NSF proposal reviewer and panelist, a peer reviewer for scholarly journals, and an AGU session convener, advancing interdisciplinary engagement at the interface of Earth science and artificial intelligence.
