Description

This community connects UTEP faculty and professional staff who are involved in community engagement activities or research related to COVID-19.
The goal of this community is to connect and support interaction among members and related community stakeholders. The efforts of this community provide a snapshot of the various ways that UTEP is responding to COVID-19 in the community and beyond. Research is underway at The University of Texas at El Paso’s School of Pharmacy to develop vaccines and antiviral drugs to combat the novel coronavirus within 15 months to two years.
Suman Sirimulla, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences at UTEP, is leading a group of experimental researchers to virtually develop the molecular structure of a protease inhibitor that would target the coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person.

UTEP Costumers Sew Face Masks to Assist Others

A request for fabric face masks to assist elderly residents at an assisted living facility in Washington state became a call to action for several costume makers at The University of Texas at El Paso’s Department of Theatre and Dance, and their efforts have expanded to benefit border agencies.

Requesting 3D printing of mask skeletons for N95 masks

Dr. Medina is evaluating the different types of designs of printed masks available on the internet to determine which ones would work best with the Keck Centers Technology and resources. Dr. Medina shared an overview presentation of available designs. In the end, a connection to an external partner was made. External partner can manufacture mask with interchangeable filters in large volume and low cost.
