APSA DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION ADVANCING RESEARCH GRANT FOR INDIGENOUS POLITICS

APSA DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION ADVANCING RESEARCH GRANT FOR INDIGENOUS POLITICS
PI: Todd Curry
Sponsor: AMERICAN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
Political Science
Amount awarded: $2,000

This project’s goal is to document all cases involving Indigenous Peoples before state supreme courts, US appellate courts, and the US Supreme Court from 1960-2020. To do this, we need to identify cases for inclusion, collect and code data, and engage in a sophisticated mixed methods approach for analysis. The parent project for this grant request is a multi-year, NSF funded study to examine how Indigenous Peoples fair in the US judicial system (SMA #2222547), which included funding for graduate, but not undergraduate students. Political Science, especially the subfield of Law and Courts, has well documented issues with lack of diversity (Reid and Curry 2019). Our goal with this supplemental grant is to partner with undergraduate students to give them not only training and mentorship but allow them complete access to the data and ability to co-author with the PIs to jump start their success in graduate education.
