On Route 66, historic preservation of structures often takes a backseat to traditional preservation, rehabilitation and replacement options because it is more expensive and more challenging from the engineering viewpoint. The purpose of this project is to put both the engineering and historic preservation perspectives on a level playing field, and explore the challenges of maintaining the structural integrity and historic value of the bridges along Route 66. The result of the effort will be a tool to aid stakeholders in decision-making related to these valuable historic structures that considers both the societal benefits of historic preservation and the engineering challenges that come with those efforts.
