Artificial intelligence (AI) and data science now shape decisions in nearly every sector, yet undergraduate education often emphasizes technical skills without equal attention to ethical responsibility. This project joins Chapman University and The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to create a more balanced model of AI education that connects computational methods with social impact and moral reasoning.
The collaboration develops project-based course modules focused on responsible AI practices in healthcare settings. Interdisciplinary student teams from both institutions will work together on real health challenges, applying AI tools while examining issues of fairness, transparency, and community well-being. Targeted recruitment and inclusive mentorship expand participation among students from groups historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The effort builds a generation of AI practitioners prepared to innovate with both technical skill and ethical judgment.
