COMPUTATIONAL GENOMICS AND CLOUD COMPUTING AT EL PASO COMMUNITY COLLEGE
PI: Jonathon Mohl
Sponsor: El Paso Community College
Mathematical Sciences
Amount awarded: $30,345

This project expands access to computational genomics for students and faculty at El Paso Community College (EPCC) by embedding hands-on genomics and cloud computing content into required courses for biomedical science and health-related majors. Curriculum development centers on three modular learning units adapted from established national resources, including the Genomic Data Science Community Network, the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and National Institutes of Health cloud platforms such as AnVIL, with instructional use of Amazon Web Services–based tools. Together, these modules introduce foundational concepts in genomics, data science, and cloud-enabled analysis in a form appropriate for community college classrooms. Faculty capacity building is a core component of the project. EPCC instructors receive structured training through two hands-on workshops each year, ensuring successful adoption and sustained use of the modules across multiple courses. Beyond the local impact, the project emphasizes national dissemination by sharing curricular materials and implementation strategies with community colleges across the United States through presentations at the Global Bioinformatics Education Summit and other professional conferences. Collectively, these efforts broaden participation in computational genomics, strengthen faculty expertise, and create scalable pathways for integrating data-driven biomedical education at the community college level.
