We propose the Data Science Support for El Paso Innovation Hub project to support the development of data science talent, knowledge, and innovation in the Paso del Norte region. This project will fund two missions central to the El Paso Community Foundation (EPCF): 1) to support the burgeoning field of data journalism in the border region by working on projects in coordination with El Paso Matters (https://elpasomatters.org/) and 2) to support the newly formed El Paso Innovation Hub (EPIH) in learning about the critical needs and assets of the El Paso region by working on data-driven projects. The projects will center around the current needs for the EPCF and EPIH and the focus and content will be provided by the agencies. The technical expertise will be provided by the students and their research mentors at UTEP, Dr. Amy Wagler and Dr. Panfeng Liang. Drs. Wagler and Liang will support the student work through regular review of progress, providing expert feedback, and research support via computing resources and software. The primary mentor, Dr. Amy Wagler, has access to the High Performance Computing (HPC) center at UTEP and will train students in the use of this facility and provide access to the facility when needed. This structure is ensured since the students will be appointed through the Data Analytics Lab @ UTEP and paid as research assistants through the lab.
