DEVELOPMENT OF COPPER WIRE EMBEDDING TOOL FOR LULZBOT TAZ 5

DEVELOPMENT OF COPPER WIRE EMBEDDING TOOL FOR LULZBOT TAZ 5
PI: Ryan Wicker
Sponsor: DRAPER LABORATORY
W.M. Keck Center for 3-D Innovation
Amount awarded: $50,000

The project will develop an attachment tool that embeds copper wire of gages 28-32. The wire embedding tool will be attached to an existing system (Lulzbot Taz 5). The tool will embed wire by conducting thermal energy to the thermoplastic resulting in melting of the surface and embedding the wire. Outputs from the original Lulzbot Taz 5 motion control will control all of the electrical components of the tool for embedding wire. Production of this tool head will lead to fast prototyping and manufacturing of functional parts for desktop 3D printers.
