This project aims to reduce stigma and improve access to mental health care within Hispanic communities. Cultural stigma around depression and other mental health issues often hinder discussions and treatment, especially among older adults and young adults aged 18 to 25. National data show that Hispanic adults are less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-Hispanic White adults, facing barriers such as language, poverty, lack of insurance, and limited cultural competence in health systems. Local conditions highlight the urgency of this effort. A behavioral health needs assessment in El Paso County found high poverty levels and many adults living with mental health conditions, with Hispanic populations facing persistent stigma and underuse of services. The project addresses these issues through a community health worker–led, evidence-based psychosocial intervention targeting depression. By promoting open discussions about mental health and providing culturally appropriate tools and resources, the initiative aims to empower individuals to manage depression and enhance long-term mental well-being in the El Paso area.
