The UTEP team will collaborate with NASA and other government and university researchers to improve the modeling and assessment of dust emissions from rangelands, which currently cannot be accurately predicted. UTEP researchers will serve as a bridge between USDA land-based wind erosion prediction research and NASA remote sensing and modeling investigations. Ultimately, these results will be used for cross-validating a USDA soil-based rangeland dust model and NASA dust atmospheric transport models, and serve as a “proof of concept” for “upscaling” USDA wind erosion assessments to inform the National Climate Assessment.
