The proposed project will place the Blackwell School in a broader historical context, addressing its history, where and how it fits into the broader scope of Mexican schools in the Southwest, and to identify contemporary issues related to Mexican American culture and representation, particularly in terms of educational experiences and (post)segregation society. The historical information provided will address the experiences of Mexican American schoolchildren during the segregation period and the era of separate but equal thinking. It will expand awareness and enhance understanding of Blackwell School and its legacy. The proposed project will provide these items via a review of the relevant academic literature to focus on the broader themes and insights related to segregated Mexican schools, contextualizing Blackwell within this cultural-historical context. It will identify gaps in the academic literature on the topic of Mexican schools, and offer suggestions for future research, while providing a research methodology that others can employ for their own investigations. The project will serve to inform future planning, interpretive opportunities, and programming for the site as a new national park unit.
