FORKLIFT DANCEWORKS/ALLISON ORR: WATER MOVES IN EL PASO
PI: Melissa Melpignano
Sponsor: New England Foundation for the Arts
Theatre and Dance
Amount awarded: $10,000

Movement and storytelling will shape public engagement during World Water Week at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), in collaboration with Forklift Danceworks and its Artistic Director, Allison Orr. The project brings together local water workers, college students from Texas and New England, and residents of the Paso del Norte region to reveal the often-unseen labor that keeps water systems functioning. Performance becomes a practical tool for civic dialogue, inviting audiences to understand environmental challenges through the language of the body and everyday experience. The initiative centers on **Water Moves**, a free participatory performance in San Jacinto Plaza on March 20, 2025, directed by Orr in collaboration with UTEP Director of Dance Dr. Melissa Melpignano. Water scientists, students, community members, and local dance artists will create a shared event that connects water, labor, and daily life in the border region. Approximately 15 students from UTEP and Wesleyan University will also take part in site visits and learning sessions to deepen their understanding of regional water issues. By designing accessible public activities, the project expands civic and artistic participation and strengthens environmental awareness within underserved communities.
