FORKLIFT DANCEWORKS/ALLISON ORR: WATER MOVES AT UTEP WORLD WATER WEEK 2025
PI: Melissa Melpignano
Sponsor: Texas Commission on the Arts
Theatre and Dance
Amount awarded: $8,000

Performance and community engagement will anchor World Water Week activities at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) through collaboration with Forklift Danceworks and Artistic Director Allison Or. The project uses movement and storytelling to reveal the essential labor of water stewardship and to connect residents with environmental challenges facing the Paso del Norte region. As a key artistic partner for the conference, Forklift works with local water workers, students, and community members to translate technical issues into accessible public experiences. A centerpiece of the initiative is **Water Moves**, a free participatory performance in San Jacinto Plaza on March 20, 2025, co-directed by Orr and UTEP Director of Dance Dr. Melissa Melpignano. Water scientists, college students, local dance artists, and residents will collaborate to illustrate how water shapes daily life, labor, and regional identity. Site visits and learning sessions will engage approximately fifteen students from UTEP and Wesleyan University, deepening understanding of water infrastructure and community needs. The project expands civic participation in environmental awareness and demonstrates how the arts can strengthen dialogue across communities.
