The program will serve both academic and general audiences invested in our borderland environment, privileging a humanities-centered approach able to inform other fields and realms of inquiry and praxis. Because the science and social sciences are the most common lenses to think through the border and the environmental needs of the Paso del Norte territory, we strive to offer informed public programming that disseminates the fundamental insights of the humanities to the larger community. Professor Alvarez's interventions are conceived and tailored to primarily serve the people that live in El Paso and in the surrounding border communities (many of these are underserved communities). With the audience in mind, we have designed this program to utilize language accessible to people outside the academic and disciplinary fields that is culturally and linguistically appropriate. We organize this event with the awareness that the Paso del Norte community lacks public talks and discussions that address the environmental urgencies of the region while accounting for its specific communities, histories, and cultural traits. Conversations that matter for the community often happen in the strict realm of organized academia and so require affiliation or enrollment. For this reason, we, a team of scholars and community members, have decided to organize a conference that utilizes the infrastructures and workforce of the public university to make academic research viable to the community and to set it in conversation with the community.
