NRT: DESIGN FOR EQUITY IN POLICIES, PRODUCTS, PROCESSES, PLACES AND PEDAGOGY FOR PEOPLE: A TRANSDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO GRADUATE RESEARCH TRANING PI: Priyadarshini Pennathur Co-PI: Johannes Strobel, Thenral Mangadu, Rao Singamaneni, Arunkumar Pennathur Sponsor: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering Amount awarded: $2,992,878 The fundamental question of how we can make design decisions, design policies, and create systems in a way that benefits both the present and the future society, that is, equity centered decision making and design, has the potential to transform this world into a sustainable and just society. Societal challenges due to design inequities are complex, interconnected and enormous for any one discipline, sector or system to solve, demanding new approaches to design and problem solving across disciplines. Our NRT program uses a transdisciplinary, convergent, discipline agnostic research and training approach to prepare MS and PhD students to develop equity centered decision making and design thinking skills that they can take to their chosen professions and career path. Students in any discipline can become an NRT trainee to develop the essential skills to integrate equity into the design of policies, products, processes, places and pedagogy to serve a community of need.Trainees will engage in research projects that are at the intersection of addressing challenges in reshaping design thinking, in the design of policies, products, processes, places and pedagogy, across interconnected disciplinary challenges in health, infrastructure, transportation, public services, and education, to serve communities in need. To promote integration of research, education and training, trainees will participate in community project experiences that align with these research themes.
