A shortage of minority representation among neuroscience researchers contributes to a lack of scientists and educators who can effectively reach out to minority communities. The Summer Mentoring and Research Training: Methodologies in Neuroscience of Drug-abuse (SMART-MIND) Program has been successfully implemented at the University of Texas at El Paso every summer for the past four years. Based on previous years' success, SMART-MIND is applying to renew the program for another five years. Our goal is to continue to offer outstanding opportunities to engage minority students and teachers in research projects that study different aspects of the neuroscience of drug addiction; and to inspire and enable more minority students to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences.
