Routine flushing of drinking water mains is widely used to address water-quality concerns and maintain distribution systems, yet limited guidance exists for locations that require regular flushing as part of normal operations. This research develops evidence-based practices for routine flushing of dead-end water mains and examines how to integrate those practices into existing utility flushing programs. By evaluating options for routine flushing duration and implementation, the project seeks to address a gap in current guidance while helping utilities balance water quality, water loss, operational costs, and customer concerns. The findings will add new knowledge to support drinking water distribution system management and routine flushing practices.
