Balanced mix design relies on performance tests to evaluate asphalt mixtures, yet variability in test results can make it difficult to distinguish meaningful differences in mix properties. Researchers will examine the repeatability, variability, and acceptance criteria of performance tests used in balanced mix design, including the Hamburg wheel tracking test, overlay test, IDEAL-CT, and IDEAL-RT. Work will assess how factors such as equipment and testing procedures influence results and whether current tests can reliably detect variations in mixture composition. Findings will help determine the suitability of these tests for mix design, quality control, and acceptance decisions and contribute to implementation of performance-based balanced mix design practices.
