The Border Biomedical Research Center (BBRC) at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) serves as a hub for research aimed at reducing health disparities in the Borderplex, a region of far West Texas with a majority Mexican-origin Hispanic population. Supported by the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Program, BBRC advances a coordinated portfolio of research projects and core facilities organized around a central theme of targeted expansion. This approach is designed to generate transformational findings that directly address Hispanic health disparities while strengthening UTEP’s capacity for basic, behavioral, population, and clinical research. Through this work, BBRC focuses on improving health outcomes for Mexican-origin Hispanics in the region, building and sustaining research infrastructure, and cultivating a robust mentoring environment. By supporting faculty development and training students and early-career researchers, the center functions as a critical entry point into the biomedical workforce for Hispanics and other underrepresented groups, aligning scientific discovery with workforce diversification and long-term community impact.
