The purpose of Diabetes Awareness Training Program for Community Outreach (Phase III) is to raise diabetes awareness among different sectors in the Paso Del Norte Region. The main goals of the project are to: 1) Train 40 students as Diabetes Awareness Ambassadors; 2) Conduct community presentations by newly trainee students; 3) Adapt the already developed Diabetes Awareness Training program into a self-pace online training. In 2022, a team of faculty members with expertise in nutrition and dietetics, public health, education, program evaluation, and public speaking, received funding from Paso Del Norte Health Foundation (PDNHF) to develop and implement a Diabetes Awareness Training Program for Community Outreach (Phase I). During Phase I of the program, 25 students pursuing their BS Public Health degree and enrolled in Practicum I and Practicum II, received the diabetes awareness training that was complemented with education/pedagogical strategies for adult learning, and public speaking strategies. During Phase II (in progress), an additional cohort of students of about 36 students completed the diabetes awareness training during Fall 2023. The training products developed during Phases I and Phase II of the program include three Diabetes Modules and Training Handbook and Guide with Adult Learning and Public Speaking strategies. Raising diabetes awareness among different sectors of the population will collectively contribute to the comprehensive effort of the Paso Del Norte Health Foundation to help decrease the disease burden of this prevalent, costly, and detrimental condition in the Paso Del Norte Region.
