Description:This patent application identifies many particular volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are positively or negatively related to cancers. For example, we found 30 VOCs are predominantly present in prostate cancer patients and 22 VOCs are mainly exist in non-prostate cancer patients. These compounds are potential candidates for developing diagnostic tools for prostate cancer and other types of cancer detection.
Abstract:Certain embodiments are directed to methods of identifying a subject having prostate cancer, the method comprising the steps of: (a) obtaining a sample from the subject; (b) determining a level of at least one volatile organic compound associated with prostate cancer in the sample; and (c) comparing the level of the at least one volatile organic compound from the sample with the level of the at least one volatile organic compound in a negative control sample, wherein a significantly different level of the at least one volatile organic compound in the sample as compared to the level of the compound in the negative control sample is indicative of the presence of prostate cancer in the subject.
