Description

A smart city is a place where people enjoy improvements in the Quality of Life through continuous innovation in public and private services that are enabled by open and transparent sharing of information between the residents, visitors, public and private sectors, supported by efficient, reliable, and secured communication infrastructures. Additionally, the ability to process, synthesize, and integrate information is essential, as is the respect for individual rights and privacy. The smart cities community was formed by a group of researchers in the College of Engineering in 2014.

Aspirations

To be a model for interdisciplinary, international collaboration that advances the knowledge of transforming cities into smart cities through joint research, education, and community engagement.

U.S.-Mexico Bidirectional Study Abroad Program on Smart Cities

Students from UTEP and The University of Guadalajara (UdeG) came together for this Smart Cities program in Spring 2016. Students from UdeG began attending classes at UTEP and took field trips in April. UTEP students then traveled to Guadalajara in June to attend classes and visited sites in downtown Guadalajara. To finish off the program, all students competed in the Smarter Cities Hackathon competition sponsored by IBM Mexico.

Interdisciplinary Research (IDR) Program on Smart Cities

This IDR proposal seeks seed funding to launch an innovative research program at UTEP in the interdisciplinary area of smart city. The objective of this IDR project is to identify technological issues and formulate a research agenda for an international smart city research program, with a view of submitting a proposal to seek funding at the national and international levels.

Atlantis Dual Masters Program

The project brings together a consortium three universities (The University of Texas at El Paso, U.S., Czech Technical University, Czech Republic, and University of Zilina, Slovak Republic) to implement the Dual Masters Degree Program in Transportation and Logistics Systems from 2010 to 2014. The goal is to have 24 U.S. and 24 E.U. students to participate in this international program. Students are expected to attend courses and conduct research in the U.S. university and two E.U. universities.

The Faculty Led Study Abroad program in Perú offers the opportunity for undergraduate UTEP and EPCC students to take a three credit UTEP elective course in Sustainable Engineering at the University of Piura in Perú. The program will be offered in Spanish by UTEP and UDEP faculty.

This paper describes our current efforts to extend this work by establishing a Safety Index Indicator – a derived metric that aggregates the value of user-submitted reports to generate real-time safety levels for areas within a city considering the lifespan and verification of these reports.

Smart Mobility for Seniors through the Urban Connector

Related Effort: Connected Cities for Smart Mobility towards Accessible and Resilient Transportation (C2SMART)

This paper describes our recent efforts in increasing our understanding of seniors' mobility needs and how to address them through technology, and in particular the development of the Urban Connector. Urban Connector is a product of our interdisciplinary research efforts aiming to address mobility challenges of seniors in El Paso, a city in the U.S. Southwest and validated in New York, a city in the U.S. The Urban Connector is a mobile application which design follows recommendations for the development of technology catered to seniors.

This paper (accepted at the IEEE International Smart Cities conference) describes how researchers are developing a smart cities innovation network with an emphasis on smart city mobility, smart buildings, and smart bridges. The consortium is applying a semantic-based approach to address the initial challenge of building an effective interdisciplinary network of university researchers located in different parts of the world, in three cities with different sizes and stages of economic development.
